Piano Lessons in Larchmont, NY
Larchmont Village, Town of Mamaroneck! My hometown!
I grew up in the Larchmont Woods section of Mamaroneck, attended Saints John & Paul and Murray Avenue elementary schools , Hommocks Middle School and Mamaroneck High School. MHS is still renowned for its excellent music program and that rich musical environment was my inspiration to take on a conservatory music education at Mannes College of Music in Manhattan.
One of my earliest musical memories of Larchmont was when I was given permission to play the Hammond organ at Sts. John & Paul Church during off hours. The pastor actually gave me the organ key! Each time I played the organ, I would start out with some Bach organ works and transgress from Jimmy Smith jazz to Procol Harum baroque rock.
By the time I reached Mamaroneck High School I was in several bands playing piano, organ and alto sax and composing songs in the prog rock style of Soft Machine. We played at dances in every synagogue and church in Larchmont and Mamaroneck.
My first attempt at teaching was at Central School summer camp as the music counselor. There I was, very lucky to play their Wurlitzer Electronic Piano five days a week and teach some very talented kids, one of whom is my loyal Larchmont piano tuner Joel Trieger.
After my studies in piano, theory and composition at Mannes College of Music in Manhattan, I began a piano teaching career when bassist Paul Adamy referred me to my first piano student Scott Barkham, both very busy music pros from Larchmont. The Barkhams spread my name around Larchmont as I amassed a full 5 days of piano students.
Even after moving to the Upper East Side in Manhattan, I continued to teach piano lessons privately in Larchmont. I couldn’t abandon my loyal students nor my mother’s home cooking.
Once we started a family and moved to Scarsdale, I was back on my home turf and teaching piano to another generation of Larchmonters.
